The new policies of Meta’s AI make the public worried because, according to its new privacy rules, the company will use all the stuff you post like messages, photos, and tracking data to enhance its AI.
People almost made 11 complaints to the company about the changes in the policy of Meta on June 5 about the use of their data without their permission to teach AI. These changes led to a violation of the privacy of the European Union.
To stop such changes privacy group called None of Your Business asked national privacy authorities to take action. The eleven complaints came from Germany, Australia, Greece, Italy, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Poland and Spain.
Contents of the Complaints
The accusation stated that Meta’s recent policy changes dated June 26, would allow the company to use years of personal posts, private photographs, and internet tracking data for teaching its AI.
NOYB make protection authorities in 11 complaints to take an urgent review of the due to impending changes.
NOYB states that according to new policies of Meta, companies can use the information of people to teach and enhance AI tools and AI models. They can even share this data with other companies.
These new rules affect many users of Meta services in Europe. People cannot remove their information once it is in the system.
NOYB takes legal action against Meta and other major companies for allegedly violating EU data regulations. Companies who violate these rules may be fined 4% of their global revenues by the GDPR.
Meta Ignores European Court Ruling
Max Schrems, NOYB founder stated that in 2021, the Court of Justice decided on this matter. He thinks that this decision should determine the issue of using personal data by Meta companies.
He mentioned:
“The European Court of Justice (CJEU) has already made it clear that Meta has no ‘legitimate interest’ to override users’ right to data protection when it comes to advertising… It seems that Meta is once again blatantly ignoring the judgments of the CJEU.”
Schrems says that it is unfair that user will project their privacy all alone. According to the law, Meta must get clear permission instead of offering a secret or deceptive method for users to choose.
He highlighted that Meta needs to request consent from users before using their data. Meta has forced users to request exclusion from data consumption.
Google got sued in July 2023 for comparable offenses after revising its privacy policies. According to the lawsuit, Google trained its AI on a vast amount of data, including data that belonged to other people.
